SLUT by Patricia Cornelius
The Dog Theatre, Footscray
Wed 30th June - Sat 17th July 2010
Director Paola Unger
Stage Verve Company 2010 - Hayley Birch, Kelly Hynes, Victoria Morgan
Full of rich and poetic insight into human behaviour, Patricia Cornelious’ SLUT will be presented at The Dog Theatre from Wednesday 30th June to Saturday 17th July. Exploring the constraints that social labels place upon us, this production of SLUT forces the audience to interrogate views on sexuality, equality, and the pressure to conform. Three women shift, merge and meld as they represent unnamed characters on a journey of individuation. In turn, they each represent the only named figure within the narrative – Lolita.
Interview by Richard Watts (Triple R) with Director Paola Unger & performer Hayley Birch
Patricia Cornelius' SLUT is a work of vital poetry and searing emotional intelligence that casts an unflinching gaze on adolescent sexuality. Paola Unger's production offers no easy answer, drawing expressive and nuanced performances from Hayley Birch, Kelly Hynes and Victoria Morgan. The actors balance the mecurial energy and vulnerability of schoolgirls against their cruelty and prurience.
Cameron Woodhead - The Age
...excellent acting by the three young performers; they're well directed by Paola Unger...Victoria Morgan played Lolita in this performance (the three rotate the role); she is expressive and beautiful, mesmerising to watch. The other two (Kelly Hynes and Hayley Birch)...are terrifically present and enagaing...
