SHORT COURSES 2012
Our Acting Short Courses are 8 weeks and are taught by the best actor trainers in Melbourne. Combining specialised curriculum these courses are designed to maintain and expand your skills to make you a better actor and better equip you to work as an actor in Australia’s Film and TV industry. These acting short courses are skills based.
Semester One
BEGINNER SERIES
Acting Studio 1: Exploration & Confidence
Wed 6.30pm – 8.30pm | 15/02/12 – 04/04/12 (8wks) | $365
Ever wanted to act? Now’s the time! Dip your toe into the acting world or re-visit pastime pursuits. Develop skills in listening, observing and communicating and explore spatial awareness, impulse and characterisation. Topics also include:
• Introduction to Voice & Body
• Ensemble development
• Communication development
Vocal Technique Studio
Sat 10am – 1pm | 25/02/12 – 21/04/12 (8wks) | $475
Explore one of the most vital elements to the actor’s craft: the voice. Learn basic vocal techniques including, breath work, vocal resonance, vocal and articulatory muscularity and vocal fluency to increase your ability to fully express the truth of the text and emotional integrity of the character. Topics also include:
• Identifying habitual patterns
• Strengthening spinal support
• Oral reading skills
• Accent in performance
Comedy Studio
Mon 6.30pm – 8.30pm | 02/04/12 – 28/05/12 (8wks) | $365
Think you’re funny but need some confidence? Taking in a few shows for the festival and feel inspired? Learn the basics of giving a comedic performance and build skills in rhythm, timing, text and character. Topics also include:
• Building confidence in comedy
• Comedic monologue analysis and development
• Developing original comedy material
Acting Studio 2: Working with Scripts
Wed 6.30pm – 8.30pm | 11/04/12 – 06/06/12 (8wks) | $365
How do I tackle a script? How do I transform text and develop strong character choices? Develop skills and techniques for approaching text, transformation, physicality and the importance of making strong choices. Topics also include:
• Introduction to script analysis
• Introduction to language and text
• Monologue and scene development
* Complimenting skills developed within Acting Studio 1, or can be taken as a stand-alone course. Receive a 10% discount when you enrol in two Acting Studio courses, or 20% if you enrol in all four.
Acting Studio 3: Approach to Performance
Wed 6.30pm – 8.30pm | 20/06/12 – 08/08/12 (8wks) | $365
This is your 5 minute call… create your tool-kit of skills for performance and delve into character analysis and scene study with this hands-on experience. Be directed by an Industry Professional. Topics also include:
• Collaborating to develop a show for performance
• Rehearsal and research
• In-house showing of rehearsed material

ACTOR SERIES
Comedy in Performance
Sat & Sun 10am – 4pm | 05/05/12 & 06/05/12 (2 days) | $265
A course designed actors who feel less confident about “being funny” than being dramatic. Work thoroughly with contemporary comic monologues, exploring comic skills and uncover the structure of great comic writing. Focus closely on rhythm, timing, text and character in comic performance. Topics also include:
• Building confidence in comedy
• Comedic monologue analysis and development
• Developing original comedy material
Advanced Scene Study
Fri 6.30pm – 9.30pm | 11/05/12 - 29/06/12 (8wks) | $475
Explore character analysis within intensive scene/monologue study. Strengthen your investigation of text and become confident with your choices, as you work through chosen scenes and monologues. Finetune your skills in text and character development. Topics also include:
• Advanced investigation of character
• Extended improvisation and impulse skills
• Advanced script analysis
Movement in Performance
Sat & Sun 10am – 4pm | 02/06/12 & 03/06/12 (2 days) | $265
Work with a highly experienced physical performer, connect and develop your body as a tool for performance in an intensive exploration of physicality. Understand the importance of breath, flexibility and movement and use it to aid performance. Topics also include:
• Strengthening the body as a tool for performance
• Understanding the body in performance investigation
• Extended physical and spatial awareness
Writing for Performance
Sat & Sun 10am – 4pm | 16/06/12 & 17/06/12 (2 days) | $265
Want to create new and innovative work for the theatre? Develop creative writing skills and gain knowledge on structure and story as necessary foundations for scriptwriting. Explore the relationship between writing and performance while engaging with the challenges and demands of text development. Topics also include:
• Research into established and alternative scriptwriting practices
• Investigation of adaptive and original texts
• Analysis of dramatic text
